Our History

The Calvary Church of the Nazarene was planted consequent to a God given vision and divine plan which dawned in the mind of Pastor C. S. Dhas while pasturing a home mission Church in Jawahar Nagar, Chennai in South India. The first worship service began on 7th March, 1982, in a humble way with just seven families in a rented accommodation wherein the Dhas family lived. Week after week the worship continued and the congregational strength multiplied. The house owner Mr. George Jacob was kind enough to permit us to erect a thatched shed on the terrace of their building for church worship. In about six months time the shed was blown up by a cyclonic storm and gale and we were compelled to move out because of the catastrophe from the location to an open ground due to the size of the congregation. Later, we erected another temporary shed for church Worship. After a short while that was pulled down due to unprecedented floods during the devastating monsoon time. Then we were to move out again to another rented building in Jawahar Nagar. During that time, our Pastor C. S. Dhas, in the year 1982 got ordained through FECI for which we always remain grateful.

In the meantime the Church Board felt the need of joining an established Church and entrusted Rev. C. S. Dhas to take suitable steps in this endeavour. Thus In the first half of year 1983 the Church Board approached Rev. Bronel Greer, the South India Mission Director, for the Church of the Nazarene in this effort. The deliberations took six months and on 23rd October 1983, the local church became a part of a larger entity and was officially incorporated with the Church of the Nazarene, International.

With the good auspices and noble gesture of Rev. Bronel Greer the Church was able to purchase the present premises for the Church building on 16th August 1983, wherein we have the present Church building. The construction of the building was started on 21st June 1987 and the first phase of the building was completed and dedicated on 21st February 1988. God was at work and the congregation began to grow. Later we felt the need for widening the Church building. In the second phase, the present Altar portion was extended and the Parsonage on the first floor was constructed and further dedicated on 25th August 1991. The third phase of the building (10 feet at the front and the office rooms and the multipurpose hall on the first floor) was added later and dedicated on 9th February 1998. The frontage was also covered and widened to facilitate additional space. We are indeed very thankful to the congregational members for their prayerful/ liberal contribution and support in these projects.
